The Former President’s Son Used Independence Day to Accuse Donald Trump’s Family of Turning Government Into a Family Business
Hunter Biden chose the Fourth of July weekend to launch a sweeping public attack on President Donald Trump and members of the Trump family, accusing them of using political power for private financial benefit.
His social media posts portrayed the Trump family as operating with fewer ethical restraints than political families of the past and ended with a sarcastic reference to Trump as a king. The criticism quickly spread online and reignited a much older argument over political families, influence, business relationships and conflicts of interest.
But Hunter’s intervention immediately invited another question.
Could he credibly position himself as a critic of political corruption without reopening the controversies that have followed his own business dealings and legal history for years?
Hunter Biden’s Own Record Became Part of the Reaction
The response was sharply divided.
Supporters praised Hunter for directly confronting allegations surrounding Trump family businesses and investments. Critics responded by pointing to Hunter’s years of foreign business relationships, his federal criminal cases and the sweeping pardon granted to him by his father before Joe Biden left office.
Those controversies are not interchangeable with the allegations Hunter made against the Trump family.
But politically, they made his choice of messenger impossible to separate from the message.
Hunter Biden has spent years at the center of questions about whether his famous surname helped him gain access to business opportunities while his father held powerful public offices.
His Work With Burisma Remains One of the Most Familiar Controversies
Hunter joined the board of Ukrainian energy company Burisma in 2014 while Joe Biden was serving as vice president.
The arrangement became politically explosive because the elder Biden was involved in United States policy toward Ukraine at the time.
Hunter later acknowledged that joining the board may have demonstrated poor judgment because of the political appearance it created, although he denied committing an ethical violation.
The distinction remains important.
Hunter’s association with Burisma created serious appearance and conflict-of-interest questions, but investigations did not establish the often-repeated allegation that Joe Biden accepted a multimillion-dollar Burisma bribe. A former FBI informant who supplied a central version of that claim later pleaded guilty to lying about the alleged scheme.
China Became Another Major Focus
Hunter’s business relationships in China also generated extensive scrutiny.
In December 2013, he accompanied then-Vice President Joe Biden to Beijing aboard Air Force Two.
During that trip, Hunter met Chinese businessman Jonathan Li, who later became connected to an investment venture involving Hunter. Reuters reported on the trip and the controversy surrounding claims that Hunter benefited from his father’s political position.
Hunter’s attorney previously said he traveled with his daughter and conducted no business during the official trip itself. That account has remained part of the dispute over what significance should be attached to the visit.
The broader issue was not simply whether one meeting occurred on one trip.
Critics argued that Hunter’s proximity to a sitting vice president created opportunities and access unavailable to an ordinary businessman.
The Famous “Big Guy” Email Added Fuel to the Debate
Another long-running controversy involved an email discussing a proposed Chinese business venture and asking whether “10” would be held for “the big guy.”
Former Hunter Biden business associate Tony Bobulinski publicly said he understood “the big guy” to mean Joe Biden.
However, the evidentiary picture has always required caution.
Forensic reviews authenticated thousands of emails from material associated with Hunter Biden, but The Washington Post reported that the particular email containing the “10 held by H for the big guy?” language could not itself be independently authenticated through the cryptographic process used for many other messages. A recipient nevertheless publicly vouched for its authenticity.
That distinction is frequently lost in partisan arguments.
The email exists as a politically significant piece of evidence, but claims about exactly what it proves should not go beyond what has been established.
A Former Business Partner Offered Another Complicated Account
Devon Archer, another former Hunter Biden business associate, testified to congressional investigators that Hunter sold what Archer described as the “illusion of access” to Joe Biden.
At the same time, Archer said Joe Biden was not directly involved in Hunter’s business dealings.
That testimony became important because both sides used different portions of it.
Critics focused on the value of the Biden name and the access Hunter could create.
Defenders emphasized that the testimony did not establish that Joe Biden personally participated in the financial arrangements.
The Laptop Controversy Never Completely Disappeared
Hunter Biden’s laptop became one of the most politically explosive stories of the 2020 election and continued generating debate afterward.
Later forensic reviews confirmed that significant portions of the material associated with Hunter were authentic.
However, experts also warned that some widely circulated copies had chain-of-custody problems and that not every file could be independently verified.
That complicated reality is considerably different from either extreme version of the story.
It was inaccurate to dismiss all of the material as fabricated.
It was also inaccurate to assume every file circulating publicly had been conclusively authenticated.
Hunter’s Legal Problems Became Undeniably Real
Separate from the political investigations into his business relationships, Hunter faced federal criminal cases involving firearms and taxes.
In June 2024, a Delaware jury convicted him on three felony gun charges connected to statements he made when purchasing a firearm while using illegal drugs.
Later that year, Hunter pleaded guilty to nine federal tax offenses, including three felonies and six misdemeanors.
Those cases were not allegations from political opponents.
They were federal prosecutions resulting in a jury conviction and guilty pleas.
Then Joe Biden Issued His Son a Sweeping Pardon
On December 1, 2024, President Joe Biden granted Hunter a full and unconditional pardon.
The pardon covered federal offenses Hunter “committed or may have committed or taken part in” from January 1, 2014, through December 1, 2024, including his gun and tax cases.
The breadth of the pardon immediately became controversial.
It covered roughly eleven years and began in 2014, the same year Hunter joined Burisma’s board.
That timing fueled criticism from Republicans and some Democrats who argued that the pardon undermined Joe Biden’s previous promises that he would not interfere with his son’s prosecution.
Joe Biden Said His Son Had Been Treated Unfairly
The former president defended the decision by saying Hunter had been selectively and unfairly prosecuted because of his identity as the president’s son.

When Hunter accused the Trump family of corruption over Independence Day weekend, critics did not have to search very far for counterarguments.
His own history provided them.

China.

Federal tax charges.
And finally, a sweeping pardon from his father.
None of those facts automatically disproves any allegation Hunter makes about Donald Trump or the Trump family.
But they do create an obvious credibility challenge whenever he presents himself as an authority on political ethics.
Hunter’s Trump Allegations Also Deserve to Be Judged on Their Own Evidence
Hunter’s July 4 posts focused on financial arrangements involving members of Trump’s family, including Jared Kushner’s investment fund, business interests involving Donald Trump Jr., and other ventures that Hunter argued represented serious conflicts between public influence and private wealth.
Those claims should be examined individually rather than accepted or rejected because of Hunter Biden’s identity.
The same standard applies to allegations involving Hunter.
Political hypocrisy may affect a speaker’s credibility.
It does not by itself determine whether the underlying factual claim is true.
The Comparison Between the Biden and Trump Families Is More Complicated Than Either Side Suggests
Partisans often describe the two families in sharply different terms.
Trump supporters emphasize that Donald Trump and his adult children were involved in private businesses long before his political career.
Critics respond that once Trump entered public office, existing businesses created potential conflicts involving foreign governments, investors and people seeking political influence.
The Biden controversy developed differently.
Joe Biden spent most of his adult life in government, while Hunter pursued private business ventures that critics say benefited from proximity to his father’s political standing.
Those structures are different.
Both nevertheless raise questions about the difficult boundary between a powerful public official and financially active family members.
There Is No Evidence That Every Hunter Biden Allegation Was Proven
Over years of investigations, political rhetoric frequently moved beyond the available evidence.
Republican-led inquiries documented extensive business relationships involving Hunter and other Biden relatives.
Witnesses described Joe Biden appearing on phone calls or interacting socially with some of Hunter’s associates.
But claims that Joe Biden personally entered Hunter’s business arrangements or received certain alleged foreign bribes were not established by the evidence cited in several major investigations, and one prominent bribery allegation was ultimately exposed as fabricated.
That does not erase legitimate questions about access, appearances or Hunter’s judgment.
It does mean allegation and proof should not be treated as interchangeable.
The Same Standard Should Apply to Trump
Hunter’s argument depends on another principle: that family relationships should not shield financial arrangements from scrutiny merely because the businesses themselves are legal.
That principle can reasonably be applied to any administration.
If a president’s family members receive major investments, contracts or other financial benefits while remaining politically connected to the president, questions about conflicts and influence are legitimate.
But those questions still require evidence.
Calling something “corruption” is a conclusion, not a substitute for demonstrating what happened.
Hunter Biden Has Recently Returned to Public Political Combat
The July 4 posts were not an isolated appearance.
Hunter has become much more active publicly in 2026, posting frequently online, responding to critics, discussing his past addiction and legal history, and defending his father’s presidency.
That new visibility has created a striking reversal.
For years, Democratic strategists often treated Hunter as someone whose controversies created political risk for his father.
Now Hunter is voluntarily entering partisan fights under his own name.
That guarantees that every attack he makes will bring his own record back into the conversation.
His Pardon Ended Federal Exposure Covered by the Grant, but It Did Not Erase the Record
A presidential pardon has significant legal consequences.
Hunter cannot be federally prosecuted for offenses covered by the pardon during the specified period.
But the pardon did not erase the historical events surrounding his convictions, guilty pleas or business dealings.
Nor did it prevent political opponents from continuing to criticize those events.
Legally, the pardon closed important doors.
Politically, it ensured the controversy would remain part of both Joe Biden’s and Hunter Biden’s public legacies.
That Is Why the Fourth of July Post Became More Than an Attack on Trump
Hunter intended his message to focus attention on Donald Trump and his family.
Instead, the post also reopened a debate about Hunter himself.
To supporters, his own history does not disqualify him from pointing out potential conflicts involving others.
To critics, the sight of Hunter Biden accusing another political family of corruption after receiving a presidential pardon from his father represented extraordinary hypocrisy.
Those competing interpretations explain why his post generated such intense reaction.
The Larger Question Is About Standards, Not Surnames
American politics has increasingly struggled with the role of presidential relatives.
Family members can be private citizens while simultaneously possessing extraordinary proximity to public power.
That proximity can create access, business opportunities and perceptions that would not exist for an ordinary person.
The problem becomes even more difficult when partisan loyalty determines whether voters consider those arrangements corrupt or harmless.
A consistent standard would require examining evidence the same way regardless of whether the surname is Biden, Trump or anything else.
Hunter Biden Can Attack Trump, but He Cannot Escape His Own History
Hunter Biden’s July 4 intervention succeeded in attracting attention to his accusations against the Trump family.
It also demonstrated why his own political baggage will follow him into virtually every ethics debate he enters.
His foreign business dealings were real.
His Burisma board position was real.
His China-related business relationships were real.
His gun conviction and tax guilty pleas were real.
And his father’s broad presidential pardon was real.
Other claims surrounding the Biden family remain disputed or were never proven, and they should be described accordingly.
The same evidentiary standard should apply to the accusations Hunter is now making against Trump.
That is ultimately why his Independence Day message produced such a powerful backlash as well as support.
Hunter Biden wanted Americans to look closely at the relationship between family wealth and political power.
Many of them did.
They simply looked in both directions.
