The ballroom at the military base was filled with officers, families, polished uniforms, expensive clothing, and the formal atmosphere that surrounded the important occasion. Mark was being promoted to Major, and his wife was seven months pregnant with their first child.

She arrived wearing a simple pale blue maternity dress because it was the only formal clothing she could afford. Her swollen feet and aching back reflected the difficulty of the pregnancy, but the greater burden was the anxiety she carried into the room.
