Jenna Bush Hager Explains Her TODAY Absence After an Emotional Family Moment

Part 1 of 2

When viewers tuned in to TODAY and didn’t see Jenna Bush Hager in her usual spots during the earlier hours of the program, questions quickly began circulating.

Jenna is normally a familiar presence throughout the morning, including during “Jenna’s Morning Boost” and other segments before she joins the fourth hour of the show.

So when she was suddenly missing on August 10, viewers naturally wondered where she was.

The explanation, however, had nothing to do with television drama or a sudden career change.

It was about family.

Jenna eventually arrived in time to co-host the fourth hour of TODAY with Sheinelle Jones, and she explained that she had come almost directly from a flight.

She had been in Maine spending time with her family for an important occasion: the baptism of her young nephew.

The family gathering brought together several generations and gave Jenna an opportunity to step away briefly from her normal television schedule for a deeply personal moment.

During the baptism, Jenna also participated in the ceremony by reading a poem by Mary Oliver.

But one particular sight affected her more than she expected.

She watched her twin sister, Barbara Bush, holding her young son Edward Finn during the ceremony.

Jenna later admitted that the moment made her emotional.

For viewers who have followed Jenna for years, that reaction probably wasn’t surprising.

Family has consistently been one of the most important subjects in her public life.

She frequently speaks about her husband, Henry Hager, their three children, and the unusually close relationship she shares with her twin sister.

Her family history is also far more public than most.

As the daughter of former President George W. Bush and former First Lady Laura Bush, Jenna spent part of her young adulthood surrounded by national attention.

Yet much of what she shares with TODAY viewers now centers on ordinary family experiences: raising children, watching relatives grow older, spending holidays together, and recognizing how quickly important stages of life pass.

That made her brief absence from the morning show feel less like a mysterious disappearance and more like something many working parents understand.

Sometimes an important family event simply takes priority.

Sheinelle Jones even joked about the questions she had received regarding Jenna’s whereabouts before Jenna finally arrived at Studio 1A.

But Jenna had made it back in time for her own program.

And once she explained where she had been, the reason behind her late arrival became much more meaningful.

What Jenna revealed next about watching her sister and nephew showed why the family gathering affected her so deeply.
