My Parents Tried to Declare Me Mentally Incompetent — Then the Judge Opened a Sealed Folder

Part 1 of 2

As Jamal continued speaking from the witness stand, I sat quietly beside my attorney, Evelyn Kensington, and listened to him describe a version of my life that I barely recognized.

According to him, I was irresponsible.

Unstable.

Unable to manage my own finances.

He spoke with the confidence of someone who had repeated the story enough times to almost believe it himself.

My parents sat several rows away, watching closely.

For months, they had insisted that their attempt to have me declared mentally incompetent was about protecting me.

But I knew what was really at stake.

Control.

Control over my finances.

Control over my decisions.

And, most importantly, control over assets they had never been able to reach while I remained legally independent.

I had spent years building my career and managing my own affairs.

Yet suddenly, the people closest to me were telling a court that I could no longer be trusted with either.

Jamal continued describing supposed financial mistakes and questionable transactions.

To anyone hearing the allegations for the first time, his testimony might have sounded convincing.

But Evelyn remained completely calm.

She didn’t interrupt.

She didn’t whisper objections into my ear.

She simply took notes and waited.

I had learned that expression during the weeks we prepared for the hearing.

It meant she already knew where the testimony was going.

And she was letting Jamal walk directly toward it.

When he finally finished describing what he called my “pattern of financial instability,” Evelyn closed her notebook.

Then she stood.

“Your Honor,” she said, “before we continue with this testimony, I would like the court to review Exhibit B.”

The judge looked down at the documents in front of him.

“Exhibit B?”

“Yes, Your Honor.”

Evelyn paused.

“The sealed folder.”

Something changed immediately.

Jamal stopped moving.

My father leaned toward my mother.

For the first time all morning, neither of them looked confident.

The bailiff retrieved the folder and carried it toward the bench.

I watched Judge Whitman turn it over in his hands before carefully breaking the seal.

No one spoke.

He removed the first document.

Then another.

His eyes moved slowly across the pages.

The expression on his face changed.

First curiosity.

Then concentration.

Then something much more serious.

Jamal shifted in the witness chair.

The judge looked down again and continued reading.

I could hear papers moving in the otherwise silent courtroom.

Evelyn stood beside me without saying a word.

She knew exactly what was inside that folder.

So did I.

For months, my family had portrayed me as the person whose finances needed investigation.

But the documents in front of Judge Whitman told a very different story.

Finally, he placed the papers on the bench.

Then he looked directly at Jamal.

“Mr. Price,” he said, “I need you to think very carefully before answering my next question.”

Jamal swallowed.

The judge leaned forward.

“Are you aware of the consequences of providing false testimony in this court?”
