A Child Alone in the Airport

Caleb Mercer was only nine years old when he entered Nashville International Airport carrying an old faded blue backpack pressed tightly against his chest.

He looked tired, nervous, and much smaller than the busy crowd moving around him. Travelers hurried past with rolling suitcases, boarding passes, and phones in hand, but Caleb stood alone in the security line.

No parent walked beside him. No adult guided him forward. He kept his eyes mostly on the backpack, holding it as if everything important in his life was inside.
