On a gray Thursday afternoon in Stockton, California, Caleb Thornton rode into the gravel lot outside Harper’s Corner Café expecting nothing unusual.

He was forty-two, quiet, broad-shouldered, and used to being judged by his leather vest, weathered hands, and motorcycle boots before he ever spoke.

Most Thursdays were the same for him. He visited the cemetery outside town, sat with old memories, then stopped at the café for black coffee and silence.

That afternoon, Isabel Rojas entered the diner with her seven-year-old daughter, Sofia. Isabel looked tired, while Sofia watched the door with nervous eyes.
