Part 1 of 3
I almost laughed when I saw my ex-wife walking alone down a deserted road outside Franklin.
For a moment, I thought life had finally given me proof that leaving Megan had been the right decision.
Then I slowed the car.
And saw two small children walking beside her.
I stopped smiling.
They were twins.
Both had dark hair.
Both looked about the same age.
And even from a distance, something about them made my stomach tighten.
I pulled over.
Megan noticed my car immediately.
Her expression changed.
She took each child by the hand and began walking faster.
“Megan!” I called.
She stopped.
Slowly, she turned around.
It had been nearly a year since I had seen her.
Our divorce had been ugly.
I had believed she betrayed me.
There had been photographs.
Messages.
Even a private investigator’s report that appeared to prove she had been seeing another man.
I had confronted her.
Megan denied everything.
But by then, I thought the evidence was overwhelming.
I left.
Several months later, I married Claire.
Claire had been the person who helped me through the divorce.
She listened when I was angry.
She reassured me when I questioned whether I had made a mistake.
Eventually, I convinced myself that Megan belonged to a part of my life I needed to forget.
Until that afternoon outside Franklin.
I stepped out of the car.
One of the twins looked directly at me.
I froze.
He had my eyes.
Not similar eyes.
Mine.
The second child turned toward Megan.
His profile looked exactly like photographs of me at that age.
“Who are they?” I asked.
Megan stared at me for several seconds.
“You already know.”
My throat tightened.
“No.”
“Yes, Rowan.”
I looked at the boys again.
“They’re mine?”
Megan’s expression hardened.
“I tried to tell you.”
The words hit harder than I expected.
During the final weeks of our marriage, Megan had repeatedly asked me to meet her.
She had sent messages saying she needed to tell me something important.
I ignored most of them.
At the time, I assumed she was trying to save the marriage after being caught.
Now I wondered whether she had been trying to tell me she was pregnant.
“Why didn’t you come to me?”
She laughed bitterly.
“I did.”
“I never knew about them.”
“Because you refused to believe anything I said.”
I had no answer.
One of the boys tugged at her sleeve.
“Mom, can we go?”
Hearing him call her Mom made the situation suddenly real.
These were not strangers.
They were children whose first year of life I had completely missed.
“Please,” I said. “Just tell me what happened.”
Megan looked toward the children.
“Not here.”
She gave me the address of a small motel outside town and told me to come the following morning.
Then she walked away.
I stood beside my car watching my sons disappear down the road.
That night, I barely slept.
For the first time, I began questioning the evidence that had destroyed my marriage.
The next morning, I did something I should have done a year earlier.
I found the private investigator whose report had convinced me Megan was unfaithful.
His name was Grant.
When I arrived at his office, he looked uncomfortable the moment he recognized me.
“I need the original file on Megan,” I said.
“I don’t keep everything that long.”
“Find it.”
He hesitated.
That hesitation told me more than his words did.
After nearly an hour, he finally placed a folder on the desk.
I opened it.
Immediately, something was wrong.
The dates did not match the report I had received.
Several photographs were missing.
Then I found a payment record.
The person who had hired Grant had not been me.
It had been Claire.
My current wife.
I stared at him.
“Explain this.”
Grant looked away.
Piece by piece, the truth came out.
Claire had contacted him before my divorce.
She had paid him to follow Megan.
But surveillance had produced nothing that proved an affair.
So the material I eventually received had been manipulated.
Photographs had been taken out of context.
Dates had been changed.
Messages had been presented as something they were not.
I felt sick.
The marriage I had destroyed had been built on fabricated evidence.
And the woman who helped me through the aftermath had apparently helped create it.
Then I noticed another document inside the folder.
It was a handwritten note.
Most of it was difficult to read.
But one line was perfectly clear.
“Pregnancy confirmed — three babies.”
I read it again.
Three.
I had just seen twins.
My hands began shaking.
I looked at Grant.
“Where is the third child?”
He shook his head.
“I don’t know.”
Suddenly, finding Megan was no longer simply about discovering why she had hidden my sons from me.
There was another child.
Or there had been.
I drove home with the folder beside me.
Claire was waiting when I walked through the door.
She smiled.
“How was your meeting?”
I placed the investigator’s file on the table.
Her smile vanished.
“I know everything,” I said.
Her face went completely pale.
“About the investigator. The fake evidence. And the twins.”
Claire opened her mouth, but nothing came out.
Then I placed the handwritten note in front of her.
“Now tell me what happened to the third baby.”
For the first time since I had known her, Claire looked genuinely terrified.
And her next answer made me realize that even she did not know the full truth about what had happened to Megan.
