Matt Damon’s Wife Opens Up About Her Experience With a Brain Aneurysm

Matt Damon Reveals His Wife Had Brain Surgery a Week Before the 2024 Oscars

Luciana Barroso Surprised Him by Getting Dressed for the After-Party Once She Felt Strong Enough to Go Out

When Oppenheimer won Best Picture at the 2024 Academy Awards, Matt Damon had more on his mind than the film’s success. A week earlier, his wife, Luciana Barroso, had undergone surgery for a brain aneurysm. On Oscar night, she felt her energy returning and surprised him with a dress and a plan to go out together.

Damon shared the story in a GQ interview published on November 5, 2026. He said Barroso was doing well and recalled how much it meant that she wanted to join him at the after-party. She remembered another Oscar night, years earlier, when they had watched from home and he had wished they were there.

Why Damon Still Remembered Watching the 2007 Oscars From Bed

In 2007, Damon was working on The Bourne Ultimatum and missed the Academy Awards. He and Barroso were living in Miami with an infant at the time. They watched the broadcast from bed, both nervous about whether Martin Scorsese would win Best Director for The Departed, in which Damon had starred.

When Scorsese won, Damon jumped up and down in the bedroom. Then The Departed took Best Picture, a result he said he hadn’t even considered. Suddenly, he wished he and Barroso were there to celebrate with the people who had made the film.

In the weeks that followed, people from the cast and studio called and asked where he had been. Damon remembered feeling that he’d missed a chance to share the moment with them. Barroso remembered it too.

Barroso Made a Plan of Her Own for Oscar Night

By the time Oppenheimer reached the Oscars in March 2024, Damon was part of another cast whose film was in contention for Best Picture. He played Leslie Groves, the military officer who oversaw the Manhattan Project. Christopher Nolan’s film won seven Academy Awards that night, including Best Picture and Best Director.

For Damon and Barroso, the lead-up to the ceremony had been spent dealing with her health scare. Damon said the night of the Oscars was the first time after surgery that Barroso felt well enough to get up and had her energy back. He hadn’t expected her to get dressed for an evening out.

Then she showed him she had a dress. “This time we’re going out,” he recalled her saying. The couple went to an Oscars after-party, where the people behind Oppenheimer could celebrate the film’s wins together.

What Made the Gesture Mean So Much to Him

Damon and Barroso have been together for more than two decades and have raised four daughters. In telling the story, Damon remembered two evenings they shared. On the first, they sat together in Miami, waiting to hear Scorsese’s name. On the second, Barroso remembered how he had felt when The Departed won and decided she wanted to go with him.

Looking back in 2026, Damon said Barroso was “totally fine, thank God.” What he still remembered about that evening was the surprise of seeing her ready to leave and realizing she’d kept that conversation from their bedroom in mind all those years.
