Rachel Ward’s Life After The Thorn Birds
The Role That Changed Everything
Rachel Ward became widely known after playing Meggie Cleary in the classic miniseries The Thorn Birds.
The role was not guaranteed from the beginning, but it became one of the defining moments of her career.
The British actress and model later built a life in Australia with Bryan Brown, the man she met and fell in love with while working on the production.
A Miniseries That Became A Classic
The Thorn Birds first aired in March 1983 and quickly became a major television event.
The ten-hour miniseries was based on Colleen McCullough’s 1977 Australian novel and starred Richard Chamberlain, Rachel Ward, and Bryan Brown.
More than 30 million viewers in the United States watched the series, helping it become one of the most memorable miniseries of its era.
Spread across five nights, the drama drew attention for its emotional story, strong performances, and sweeping family saga.

Rachel Ward’s Early Years
Rachel Ward was born on September 12, 1957, in Cornwell, Oxfordshire, England.
She studied at Hatherop Castle School before attending the Byam Shaw School of Art in London.
At age 16, she left school to pursue fashion and soon became a successful model.
Ward appeared on the covers of major magazines including Vogue, Cosmopolitan, and Harper’s & Queen.
Her move toward acting began after she appeared in several commercials.
Becoming Meggie Cleary
Casting Meggie Cleary proved difficult for producers because the role required a wide emotional range.
More than 200 women were considered, and 40 actresses auditioned before Ward was chosen.
Producer Stan Marguiles explained that Meggie had to grow from a naïve young woman into someone shaped by disappointment, maturity, and reflection.
Ward later remembered the aging process for the role as surprising, especially the makeup, body suit, and older costumes.
Her audition stood out, even though she later said she received strong marks for appearance and lower marks for acting experience.
Success And Self-Doubt
The Thorn Birds became a major success and received several major awards.
Ward was nominated for a Golden Globe for her performance as Meggie Cleary.
Richard Chamberlain won a Golden Globe for his role as Father Ralph, while the miniseries won four Golden Globes, including Best Miniseries.
The production also earned six Emmy awards.
Despite the praise, Ward struggled with insecurity after some negative reviews.
“I felt terribly like I’d disappointed,” she said.
Years later, her daughter watched the miniseries and told her, “‘Mom, you were fabulous,’” a reaction Ward said meant more to her than anything else.

Love Behind The Cameras
While viewers followed Meggie’s dramatic on-screen story, Ward’s real love story was happening away from the cameras.
Bryan Brown played Meggie’s husband, Luke O’Neill, and he and Ward fell in love during filming.
“What happened on screen was happening off it – that’s why our love scenes were so believable,” Ward said.
Richard Chamberlain also noticed their connection and said, “I’ve never seen two people more in love.”
Ward and Brown married only months after filming ended.
They later had three children: Rose, Matilda, and Joseph.
Life And Career In Australia
After The Thorn Birds, Ward and Brown settled in Australia.
Ward continued acting in films and television, with credits including The Big House, Martha’s New Coat, Rake, Devil’s Playground, and The Straits.
In 2001, she received another Golden Globe nomination for her performance in On the Beach.
She also moved into producing and directing, expanding her work beyond acting.
Family, Advocacy, And Later Life
Ward also became known for her social advocacy work.
In 2005, she was awarded the A.M., Member of the Order of Australia, for raising awareness of social justice and supporting disadvantaged and at-risk young people.
In May 2019, Ward and Brown became grandparents when their daughter Matilda welcomed her son Zan.
Matilda later described how both of her parents were present during the birth, making the moment especially meaningful.
Working With Her Daughter
Ward’s daughter Matilda also entered the film world, though Ward initially encouraged her to work behind the camera instead of becoming an actress.
“Mum definitely said ‘don’t be an actress,’” Matilda recalled.
In 2016, mother and daughter worked together in The Death and Life of Otto Bloom, playing the same character at different stages of life.
Rachel Ward said their physical similarities and shared mannerisms made the casting a natural fit.
A Lasting Legacy
Rachel Ward remains closely connected to the role that introduced her to millions of viewers.
Although The Thorn Birds brought professional pressure and personal doubt, it also gave her a lasting career breakthrough and led her to the love of her life.
Decades later, Ward is remembered not only as Meggie Cleary, but also as an actress, director, advocate, wife, mother, and grandmother who continued building a meaningful life beyond one iconic role.
