At 18, Baylee Laine Put Her Own Plans Aside to Care for Four Younger Siblings — Two Years Later, She Adopted Them
A Teenager Faced With an Extraordinary Decision
Baylee Laine was still a teenager when she was forced to think about responsibilities far beyond what most people her age were facing.
Her family life had been complicated for years. Her parents divorced when she was young, and child protective services became involved with the family when Baylee was eight years old.
Her father later cared for Baylee and her brother, while her mother went on to have four additional children with two other men.
As Baylee grew older, she spent significant amounts of time at her mother’s home helping take care of her younger siblings.
What began as helping the family gradually became a major responsibility.
When her mother later had twins, Baylee reached a point where she questioned how much longer she could continue organizing her own life around caring for the children.
“I was like, ‘I can’t keep spending my summers taking care of your kids. I can’t keep doing this.’ I was a softball player and had a full ride to play softball,” she said. “Then I started panicking. ‘What am I going to do with my life if my life basically revolves around helping my mom?’ She had twins, and then I took a step back.”
Baylee Had Plans of Her Own
Baylee had worked hard to build opportunities for herself.
She was a talented softball player and had earned a scholarship that would allow her to play in college.
During her senior year of high school, she expected to move out of state and begin a new chapter of her life.
For a teenager who had spent years helping care for younger children, college represented a chance to pursue her own education, athletic goals and independence.
But leaving created another concern that Baylee could not ignore.
She kept thinking about what would happen to her younger siblings if she left.
“These kids are going to be completely alone,” she remembers thinking.
Eventually, the concern became more important to her than the future she had planned.
Baylee made a decision that would reshape not only her own life, but the lives of four younger children.
“Then, I decided I’m going to stay, and if I stay, I’m taking them,” says Baylee.
She Changed Her Education Plans and Started Working
Rather than moving away as she had originally intended, Baylee enrolled in a community college.
She also worked while trying to prepare herself financially and practically to care for her siblings.
Taking responsibility for four children required far more than simply deciding that she wanted them to live with her.
Baylee had to work through the foster care system and demonstrate that she was capable of becoming their caregiver.
Friends and relatives helped during the process.
Supporters also raised money through a GoFundMe campaign, providing assistance as Baylee tried to establish a stable home for the children.
She worked with a legal advisor and spent approximately two years fighting to become approved as a foster parent.
For someone barely out of high school, the process became an unusually demanding introduction to adulthood.
Her Four Siblings Finally Arrived
When Baylee was 19 years old, the long effort produced a major breakthrough.
Her younger siblings were officially placed in her care through the foster system.
On October 25, 2017, all four children arrived at Baylee’s home.
The moment marked the beginning of the family arrangement she had fought to create, but it did not end the legal process.
Baylee was now responsible for the daily needs of four children while still facing uncertainty about whether the arrangement could become permanent.
She still needed to navigate another difficult stage before she could legally adopt them.
The Legal Fight Continued
Before the adoption could move forward, Baylee had to seek the termination of the biological parents’ parental rights.
The process extended the uncertainty for the family.
Baylee had already reorganized her life around raising her siblings, but she continued fighting for the legal security that would allow them to remain together permanently.
Eventually, she succeeded.
Two years after the children first entered her care, the adoption became official.
Baylee was 21 years old.
At an age when many people are still completing college or beginning their first careers, she had become the legal adoptive mother of her younger brother and three younger sisters.
Becoming a Parent to Four Children Changed Everything
The successful adoption did not mean that daily life suddenly became easy.
Baylee had taken on responsibility for four children who needed stability, attention and reassurance.
She paused her education and temporarily stopped working so she could care for them full time.
The children were also dealing with difficult experiences from their earlier upbringing.
For them, moving into Baylee’s home did not immediately erase the fear and uncertainty they had already experienced.
During the early period, they struggled to believe that their new living situation was permanent.
Baylee recalled that they remained afraid someone might arrive and take them away again.
Creating a sense of security required time.
Baylee Focused Completely on the Children
The pressure of raising four siblings while managing the emotional impact of their past affected Baylee as well.
She described becoming intensely focused on simply completing everything that needed to be done.
“There were no emotions, no feelings. I became robotic. I had a job to do,” she says.
Her role had transformed dramatically in only a few years.
She had gone from being an older sister who regularly helped with younger children to becoming the person legally and practically responsible for nearly every part of their lives.
Rather than thinking primarily about softball, college or moving away, she was now thinking about providing stability for an entire household.
Feeling Safe Took Years
Baylee said the family did not immediately settle into a comfortable routine.
The children needed time to understand that their home with her was secure.
That sense of permanence developed gradually.
Baylee believes an important turning point came during the COVID-19 pandemic.
With the family spending extended periods together at home, they had more time to establish routines and experience daily life as a permanent family unit.
Over time, the children became less fearful that their circumstances might suddenly change.
The home that initially felt uncertain eventually became normal to them.
The Family Looks Very Different Today
Years have now passed since Baylee made the decision to remain close to her siblings rather than pursue the future she had originally planned.
Today, she is 28 years old.
She also has a biological daughter of her own who is three years old.
The four siblings she adopted are now between 12 and 17 years old.
According to Baylee, their lives are dramatically different from the uncertain period they experienced when they first came into her care.
She says the children are now “100 percent past all of that.”
The fears that once made them worry about being removed from their home have gradually faded as the family built years of shared stability.
Baylee Decided to Share Their Story
For years, the family lived through the changes largely as their own private experience.
More recently, Baylee decided to share their story publicly through TikTok.
She created a video featuring photographs that documented the children’s journey from their younger years through their life today.
The response was enormous.
The video quickly spread across the platform and accumulated approximately six million views.
While the number of people watching surprised Baylee, some of the responses had an even stronger impact on her.
Many viewers contacted her and explained that they had lived through similar family situations.
Other Families Helped Change Her View of What Is Normal
Hearing from people with comparable experiences gave Baylee a different perspective on her own family.
For years, she had wanted the children to have an ordinary life despite the unusual circumstances that brought them together under one roof.
The messages following the viral video showed her that many other families had also been formed through difficult or unconventional circumstances.
“I want our life to be normal. So seeing and hearing from other people that this is their normal… it validates that I don’t need to go find normalcy. We’re normal because there are so many other people who get to live life how we live,” she says.
The online response transformed the video from a personal family reflection into something that connected Baylee with people facing similar challenges.
People Began Asking Baylee for Advice
After her story spread online, Baylee began receiving messages from people who were considering taking responsibility for their own younger siblings.
Some wanted practical guidance, while others simply wanted to hear from someone who understood how difficult such a commitment could become.
Baylee does not suggest that every situation will unfold the way hers did.
She emphasizes that individual families face different circumstances and that taking responsibility for siblings can be extremely demanding.
At the same time, her experience has given her a message of encouragement for people who believe they may need to step into a similar role.
“If I can do it, anybody can do it. But it’s a lot.” says Baylee.
A Decision That Reshaped Five Lives
At 18, Baylee stood between two very different futures.
One path offered the opportunity to move away, play college softball and build a life centered on the goals she had worked toward throughout high school.
The other required her to remain close to home and attempt something extraordinarily difficult: becoming responsible for four younger siblings.
She chose the second path.
The decision led to community college, work, fundraising, legal assistance and two years of effort before she was approved to foster the children.
Even after they arrived at her home in October 2017, another lengthy process remained before adoption could become possible.
By 21, Baylee had legally adopted her younger brother and three younger sisters.
She then spent years helping them adjust to a home they could finally trust would remain theirs.
Today, the children are teenagers and preteens, Baylee has a young daughter of her own, and the family story that once felt unusual to her has connected with millions of people online.
For Baylee, the journey began with one difficult realization as a teenager: if she left, the younger children she loved might be left without the support she believed they needed.
She stayed, fought to keep them together and ultimately created the permanent family she had hoped to give them.
