Her Father Cut Her Out of His Life — Now She’s a Famous Actress

Goldie Hawn and Bill Hudson’s Marriage Ended Decades Ago—But Their Family Rift Still Echoes Today

What Began With an Instant Connection in the 1970s Eventually Became a Complicated Story of Marriage, Divorce, Estrangement and the Family Kurt Russell Helped Build

In 1975, Goldie Hawn was already one of Hollywood’s most recognizable actresses when she crossed paths with musician Bill Hudson.

The meeting happened while the two were traveling from New York to Los Angeles on a first-class flight.

Hudson, a member of The Hudson Brothers, was also enjoying professional success at the time.

His musical career had included performances alongside acts such as The Beach Boys, The Osmonds and The Monkees, while his work also extended into television and film.

Among his acting credits was the cult comedy Hysterical.

But it was his meeting with Goldie that would eventually become one of the most consequential relationships of his life.

Their Attraction Was Immediate

Hudson later described the chemistry between them as undeniable from the beginning.

“The attraction was instant. I invited her out to dinner that night, and that was it,” he shared.

The relationship developed quickly.

Hudson has spoken openly about the intense physical connection they shared, even while acknowledging that the relationship eventually became deeply troubled.

“The [intimacy] was mind-blowing. Even when everything else in the relationship turned sour, the [intimacy] was always amazing,” he added.

For a time, however, the couple appeared to be building a future together.

They Married in 1976

Goldie and Bill married in 1976 while she was pregnant with their first child.

The pregnancy marked the beginning of a new chapter for both of them.

But the birth of their son quickly became frightening.

He was born at Cedars-Sinai Hospital in Los Angeles and diagnosed with meconium aspiration, a serious condition in which a newborn inhales amniotic fluid contaminated with meconium.

The baby was isolated for several days after birth while doctors monitored his condition.

For Goldie and Bill, the experience was terrifying.

Their Son’s Birth Became an Emotional Turning Point

Hudson later remembered how deeply the situation affected both parents.

“Goldie and I were beside ourselves,” the musician remembered.

He further explained: “She was really sick, and I’d go from her bedside to the neonatal intensive care unit. The doctors didn’t think [son’s name] would make it. But [he] pulled through, and from that moment, he was our precious miracle.”

The relief of seeing their son survive made the experience unforgettable.

For a young family, it was a reminder of how quickly joy could turn into fear.

Three years later, Goldie and Bill welcomed their second child, a daughter, in 1979.

For a Time, They Were a Family of Four

With two children, the couple appeared to have built the traditional family life Bill wanted.

But beneath the surface, major disagreements were developing.

Hudson later claimed that he and Goldie held fundamentally different ideas about marriage and commitment.

According to him, he wanted a conventional, monogamous relationship.

Goldie, he said, did not see marriage the same way.

Those differences eventually became impossible to ignore.

Bill Hudson Later Blamed Infidelity for the Breakdown

Hudson has publicly claimed that the marriage ended after he discovered Goldie had been unfaithful.

He also alleged that she had told him early in their marriage that she wanted an open relationship.

“Goldie was having affairs, [and] she told me pretty much on our wedding night that she wanted an open marriage, that she couldn’t imagine being faithful to one man for the rest of her life,” he revealed.

He continued: “I wanted a traditional marriage, but Goldie couldn’t settle. Eventually, I moved out.”

The marriage came to an end in 1981.

The Divorce Changed More Than Their Romantic Relationship

The breakup did not simply separate Goldie and Bill.

It also reshaped the childhoods of their two children.

As the adults moved into new relationships and different lives, the children were left to navigate questions about loyalty, presence and family identity.

Those questions would become increasingly important in the years that followed.

For Bill, the divorce became the beginning of a long and painful estrangement from his older children.

For Goldie, it marked the beginning of another relationship that would eventually become central to her family.

Kurt Russell Entered Goldie’s Life Again in 1983

Goldie and Kurt Russell had actually met years earlier.

Their first encounter came in 1968 while they were working on The One and Only, Genuine, Original Family Band.

At the time, their lives went in separate directions.

They reunited years later on the set of Swing Shift.

This time, the connection became romantic.

Goldie and Kurt began dating in 1983.

The relationship would go on to become one of Hollywood’s longest-lasting partnerships.

Their Families Had to Learn How to Blend

Goldie brought her two children from her marriage to Bill into the relationship.

Kurt also had a son, Boston.

That meant the children had to adjust not only to a new adult relationship but also to the possibility of suddenly becoming part of a larger blended family.

Goldie’s daughter later described how significant that transition felt at such a young age.

“For me, it felt like such a big moment because it was like, ‘My mom is madly in love with this guy.’”

She added: “And I was meeting his son [Boston], which meant, ‘Does this mean that this is my brother?’ It was a lot to handle at such a young age.”

Kurt Gradually Became a Father Figure

As Goldie and Kurt’s relationship became more serious, Kurt took on an increasingly important role in the lives of her children.

He became the adult male presence they saw regularly at home.

That everyday presence eventually became more meaningful than biology for them.

Goldie and Kurt later welcomed their own son, Wyatt Russell, in 1986.

The blended family now included children from previous relationships as well as the son they shared together.

The Children’s Relationship With Bill Became More Difficult

Over time, Goldie’s two children with Bill developed a strained relationship with their biological father.

They later spoke about feeling that he had become increasingly distant after the divorce.

From their perspective, Kurt was the father figure who remained present during important parts of their childhood.

That distinction became especially clear in later public comments.

Goldie’s son reflected on his relationship with both men by saying: “It doesn’t really matter which one of these men is my father. My pa stepped in when I was six and made me the man I am today.”

For the Children, Presence Became More Important Than Biology

Both siblings have spoken warmly about Kurt’s role in their lives.

They have described him as the person who showed up consistently.

The bond did not erase Bill’s biological connection to them.

But emotionally, Kurt became the father they associated with stability and support.

That difference became one of the central themes in the family’s public story.

Bill, however, has offered a very different interpretation of how the estrangement happened.

Bill Accused Goldie of Turning the Children Against Him

Hudson has repeatedly expressed resentment about the distance between himself and his older children.

He has accused Goldie of “poisoning” them against him.

From his perspective, he did not simply walk away from the children.

He believed the family dynamic following the divorce gradually pushed him out.

Those claims created two competing narratives.

The children remembered feeling abandoned.

Bill remembered feeling excluded.

The Rift Became Public in 2015

For years, much of the tension remained a private family matter.

That changed dramatically on Father’s Day in 2015.

Oliver Hudson posted an old photograph showing himself, Kate and Bill.

The caption was brief but devastating.

“Happy abandonment day… @katehudson.”

The post immediately attracted widespread attention.

What had once been a complicated private family history was now being played out in public.

Bill Was Furious Over the Father’s Day Post

Hudson responded with anger.

He believed Oliver had deliberately chosen Father’s Day to maximize the emotional impact.

“Oliver could have picked up the phone and called me, but he hasn’t. This was clearly premeditated; he chose the photograph and posted it on Father’s Day when he knew it would cause maximum pain.”

The bitterness in his response showed how deep the estrangement had become.

Instead of creating an opportunity for reconciliation, the public confrontation appeared to widen the divide.

Kate’s Tribute to Kurt Added to the Tension

Kate also publicly celebrated Kurt as the father figure who had been present in her life.

Her comments reinforced the same emotional distinction Oliver had already expressed.

For Kate, Kurt was not merely her mother’s longtime partner.

He was the person she remembered being there through the difficult moments.

When she later spoke about the family publicly, that sense of gratitude toward Kurt remained clear.

For Bill, however, seeing both children publicly embrace Kurt while criticizing or distancing themselves from him was deeply painful.

Bill Eventually Said He No Longer Considered Them Part of His Life

The conflict escalated further when Bill publicly said he wanted Kate and Oliver to stop using the Hudson surname.

“I would ask them to stop using the Hudson name [because] they are no longer a part of my life.”

He went even further in describing the emotional rupture.

“Oliver’s Instagram post was a malicious, vicious, premeditated attack; he is
