The Doctor Who Delivered My Baby Looked at Me and Said, “Logan Wright Is My Son”
The Man Who Had Disappeared During My Pregnancy Had a Father I’d Already Met
Dr. Wright took a breath and looked down at the baby in my arms. His eyes were still wet. Beyond the door, someone was talking in the corridor, and a machine beside the bed kept beeping at steady intervals. I remember noticing those ordinary sounds because, for a few seconds, I couldn’t make sense of anything else.
“Joanna,” Dr. Wright began, his voice steadying. “Logan Wright is my son.”
I knew what the words meant. I just couldn’t put the two men together. One was standing beside my hospital bed. The other had walked out of my life without an explanation. Now the doctor was telling me that the baby I was holding was his grandson.
My first instinct was to pull my son closer. Dr. Wright saw me do it and stayed where he was.
Logan Had Never Told Me About His Father
I tried to remember a single conversation in which Logan had mentioned his father. There had been plenty of things I’d wanted to ask him before he left. It had never occurred to me that one day I would be looking at a doctor and wondering whether they had the same eyes.
“Logan and I haven’t spoken in years. We had a…difficult relationship. I never imagined he would have a child.”
I opened my mouth to answer, then closed it again. During my pregnancy, I’d imagined what I might say if Logan ever came back. Sometimes I wanted to tell him about everything he had missed. Sometimes I wanted to make him explain why he had left before I told him anything at all. I had never imagined having that conversation with his father instead.
Dr. Wright glanced at my son, then back at me. “I’m so sorry,” he said. “I had no idea. If I’d known, I would have reached out to help you.”
There was no way for him to know how often I’d wished someone would say something like that. I’d spent months getting used to the idea that I would have to work things out on my own. Hearing an offer of help now brought some relief, and it also reminded me how badly I could have used it earlier.
I Finally Asked the Question I’d Carried for Months
“Why did he leave?” I asked.
It was the question I’d gone over in my head so many times that I thought I could ask it without my voice giving me away. But as soon as I said it, I looked down at my son. He had worked one hand free of the blanket, and I tucked it back in while I waited for an answer.
Dr. Wright told me that he and Logan had argued about Logan’s future. His son had struggled with the expectations he felt were being placed on him. Eventually, Logan had put distance between himself and the people he associated with that pressure, including his father.
I could hear how carefully Dr. Wright was choosing his words. He could tell me what had happened between them. He couldn’t tell me what Logan had been thinking on the day he left me.
Still, it was the first time I’d heard anyone talk about Logan as someone they missed. For months, I had been alone with my anger and my questions. Across the room was a man who had also lost contact with him and had spent years without a conversation he wanted to have.
I could feel sorry for both of them. I could also remember what it had been like to go through my pregnancy waiting for an explanation that never came. Both feelings were there as I sat holding my son.
The Answer I Wanted Most Was the One He Couldn’t Give Me
“Do you know where he is?”
I watched Dr. Wright’s face as I asked. For a moment, I hoped he might have an old address or a number I’d never tried. Even a place to start would have felt like something.
He shook his head. “No, but I promise I will do everything I can to find him. You deserve answers, Joanna.”
There had been a time when I would have said yes to anything that might get Logan back in front of me. Now I found myself wondering what I would do if Dr. Wright actually found him. Would I want Logan to come to the hospital? Would I be able to ask him why he left with our son in the room?
I didn’t know. I wanted answers, and I wanted the chance to decide what happened after I got them. Until then, all I could do was look after the baby in my arms and take in the fact that another person now knew what had happened to us.
My Son Stirred, and the Room Felt Different
The baby moved against my chest, making a small sound that drew both our eyes. I shifted the blanket and settled him back into the crook of my arm. He had been here for such a short time. Already, one tiny movement was enough to bring my attention back from everything I couldn’t solve.
“Thank you,” I managed to say. “For being here. For telling me the truth.”
Dr. Wright nodded. He looked at me for a moment before he spoke again.
“You’re not alone anymore, Joanna. You have family now.”
Family was a big word to hear from someone I’d known only as my doctor. I still had to learn who he was, what he wanted from us, and whether I could trust the offer he was making. Yet he had given me the truth when it would have been easier to leave the room and say nothing. I could begin there.
I looked down at my son. There would be time to decide what to call the man beside us and what to say if Logan ever came back. For now, Dr. Wright was still there, waiting quietly while I held the grandson he hadn’t known existed.
For the first time since Logan left, I could imagine asking for help and hearing someone say yes.
