Carrying Pain in Silence

In her memoir, Davis also shared another difficult childhood experience. While delivering newspapers, she was molested by a neighbor.

At the time, she did not fully understand what had happened. Only after seeing her mother’s reaction did she realize the seriousness of the incident.

No police report was filed. Her mother warned the man never to touch her again and told Davis not to go to his apartment.

“She didn’t explain what had happened or why it was bad, so it just felt like this horrible secret that I was carrying around,” Geena said.

That silence shaped her for years. She learned to stay quiet even when something felt wrong.

Growing Up Different

Davis also struggled with standing out physically. Her height made her noticeable at school, and classmates teased her by calling her “Kareem Abdul-Jabbar.”

“I was tall from minute one,” she told The View. “The last thing I wanted to do was stand out.”

Despite being shy, she explored many interests. She joined the track team, played flute in the school band, and studied abroad in Sweden, where she became fluent in the language.

She later attended New England College before transferring to Boston University to study drama. Her parents did not object to her path, even though they did not fully understand the acting world.

Finding Her Way Into Entertainment

After college, Davis moved to New York City and worked several jobs while trying to build a career.

She worked as a waitress and even as a window mannequin before small modeling opportunities began to appear. One modeling job placed her in a Victoria’s Secret catalog, which unexpectedly helped open the door to film.

A director noticed her and cast her in a major comedy in 1982. That role became the beginning of her screen career.

From there, Davis began acting alongside established stars and quickly gained attention. By the mid-1980s, she was appearing in both film and television, building a reputation for intelligence, range, and presence.
