Flight Instructor Breaks Silence After Florida Plane Incident — His Revelation About the 20-Year-Old Co-Pilot

Instructor Remembers 20-Year-Old Co-Pilot Nathalia Filgueiras After Fatal Florida Learjet Crash

A Veteran Teacher’s Tribute Highlights Her Talent and Love of Flying

Nathalia Gadelha Filgueiras was only 20, but she had already made a lasting impression on the instructor who helped her begin her aviation career. Following her death in a Florida plane crash, Chris Kirk remembered a student whose ability and enthusiasm stood out across his four decades of teaching.

Filgueiras was serving as co-pilot aboard a Learjet 60 that crashed in Palm Beach County on Sunday, November 1, 2026. All nine people aboard died as the aircraft traveled from Texas toward the Bahamas.

For those who knew her through flying, the loss was also the sudden end of a promising career. Kirk’s tribute described a young woman who approached aviation with exceptional aptitude and a deep personal commitment.

An Early Start in the Cockpit

Filgueiras earned her pilot’s license while she was still in high school. Her interest in aviation developed into professional training, placing her in demanding learning environments at an age when many people are only beginning to consider their careers.

Kirk, one of her early instructors, remembered how consistently she impressed the examiners assessing her flying. His recollections focused on the ability she demonstrated during practical evaluations, where students must put their knowledge and aircraft-handling skills into action.

His praise carried the perspective of a long teaching career. After working with aspiring aviators for 40 years, he regarded Filgueiras as an unusually talented student whose performance remained memorable.

A Learjet Assessment That Impressed Her Examiner

One example in Kirk’s tribute concerned her Learjet pilot-in-command type rating. He recalled that Filgueiras had accumulated fewer than 1,100 flight hours when she completed that qualification.

Her performance, he said, led the examiner to believe she had approximately 5,000 hours of experience. The comparison reflected the impression she made during the assessment; it did not mean she had actually flown that larger number of hours.

The distinction also places the instructor’s memory at a specific point in her training. His account concerned her experience when she earned the qualification, rather than a definitive statement of her total flight time on the day of the accident.

The Passion Her Instructor Remembered Most

Although Kirk highlighted her technical achievements, his tribute placed particular emphasis on her motivation. He remembered someone who loved flying itself and brought that enthusiasm into her training.

In reflecting on his teaching career, Kirk distinguished her passion for aviation from an interest driven primarily by the prospect of airline employment and higher earnings. For him, her enjoyment of being a pilot was central to understanding who she was.

That recollection gave his tribute a personal quality beyond the qualifications and flight hours. He had watched her develop her skills, but he also remembered the enthusiasm behind the work required to earn them.

Nine Lives Lost on the Flight

The crash also killed businessman Adam Robinson, his wife Helen Sharp, and their two young children, Emma and Charlie. Their nanny, two other passengers, and the aircraft’s captain were among those who died.

The additional passengers were identified as Rachael Reed and Charmi Fehr. Captain Jeff Gregory, 55, was the other pilot aboard the Learjet.

The deaths left several families mourning at once. While the instructor’s tribute brought attention to Filgueiras’s early achievements, the wider tragedy encompassed every passenger and crew member aboard the aircraft.

The Cause Remains Under Investigation

The National Transportation Safety Board’s investigation had not established the cause of the crash. Information about difficult flight conditions and the aircraft’s descent remained part of an ongoing examination.

Accounts of a pilot’s training and character serve a different purpose from an accident investigation. Kirk’s memories describe his experience teaching Filgueiras; they do not establish the sequence of events that caused the Learjet to crash.

Likewise, her age alone does not provide an explanation for the accident. Determining what happened requires investigators to assess the evidence, and the available preliminary information does not support a final conclusion about responsibility.

Remembering the Student Behind the Qualifications

For Kirk, Filgueiras’s story extended beyond her place on the flight’s crew list. She was a former student whose ability had impressed him and whose enthusiasm he could still recall clearly.

His tribute preserved specific memories of her progress: earning qualifications early, performing strongly in assessments, and approaching aviation with a love of flying. Together, those details offered a picture of the young pilot he had known before the tragedy.

As investigators continue their work, that personal remembrance remains distinct from the unanswered questions surrounding the crash. It honors a promising life through the experiences of someone who helped her pursue the career she wanted
