Her mother, Frances, was an artist who had once worked at a school in Paris before later settling in Greenwich Village.
Her father, Richard MacGraw, was also an artist, but his life had been marked by hardship from an early age.
Richard spent part of his youth in an orphanage and ran away at 16 to work at sea before eventually studying art in Munich, Germany.
Ali later described her father as a man deeply affected by the wounds of his childhood.
“Daddy was frightened and really, really angry. He never forgave his real parents for giving him up,” she said, adding that much of his adult life was spent “suppressing the rage that covered all his hurt.”

Ali, her parents, and her brother Richard Jr. lived in a small house on a wilderness preserve, where they shared the space with an elderly couple.
“There were no doors; we shared the kitchen and bathroom with them,” Ali recalled. “It was utter lack of privacy. It was horrible.”

“The worst stuff happened when I drank,” she said. “I lost my judgment; I fancied other women’s husbands.”
In 1986, she checked herself into the Betty Ford Clinic.

At the time, her son Josh was 15 years old and saw her struggle closely.
